So, the 9th question is “Have you written anything other than Chick Lit?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

Not yet. I’m in the process of a horror story now.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

I’ve written other stories and have other ideas, but everything I’ve gotten published has been in the Chick Lit genre, including my newest book coming out in October, Breakup Boot Camp.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

Yes, my first three books are YA fantasy, my latest book is historical romance as is my current WIP.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

I dabble in everything. My main genre to write in is horror.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

Of course. Sci-fi, Horror, Mystery, Fantasy, etc etc etc.

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

I’ve also written romance, women’s fiction, and magical realism.

7) Author #7:  Summer Dowell

I’ve never actually published anything else. I’ve written a historical romance, however I doubt I will ever publish it. I love reading that genre, but writing it is another story.

8) Author #8:  Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

Nah, this is what I love. Who knows what the future will bring? For now, this is what I want to share with the world.

9) Author #9:  Sasha Lane

I have a crime novel that I keep picking up and writing and then putting down. It’s a complete change for me, and a challenge, but I’m working on it.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

Yes, I have written romance and a few non-fiction titles, one about fashion and one about a missionary who survived a terrorist attack that killed her husband. (Ultimately, it was a love story though.)

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

All the books I’ve written have been commercial women’s fiction.

12) Author #12:  Katie Joyce Cross

Yes! I moonlight as a YA Fantasy novelist as well 🙂

So, the 9th question is “What do you think is the take-away message in your book? ”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

The take away message from my book, is to watch for the signs of sex trafficking criminals and victims. Children as early as the age of 5 can be abducted and caught up in these kinds of rings. Sex trafficking a multimillion dollar industry across the globe.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

I think the takeaway message is not to take a backseat in your own life and that a happy ending can mean finding love it also can mean finding yourself!

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

1. Don’t give up and 2. for every woman there is a Mr Perfect for me out there, not a perfect man (good gracious they don’t exist, nor do perfect women) but finding that person that is perfect for you is possible. But first you have to know what you want. Make a list, be honest, be realistic, if you don’t know what you want, or if what you want is not realistic – tall, dark, handsome, rich & sexy is only available in novels, then you won’t find him and you’ll never be happy.

Revenge is sweet.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

There is always hope!

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

You are going to be okay. It’s okay to try, it’s okay to fail, it’s okay to get hurt. You’re always going to be you.

I hope the message is to never take anything too seriously because life usually works out in the end.

8) Author #8:  Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

In everything I write, the main take-away message is ‘life will happen, so let it.’

9) Author #9:  Sasha Lane

That it’s okay if things don’t work out the way that you planned them, that it’s okay not to fit in to other peoples expectations, and that it’s you’re life, so live it exactly how you want to!

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

We all have value and we can’t look to others to find our self-worth. It’s within us.

Be yourself, stand up for yourself, be kind to yourself

You are not defined by what you eat, the size of clothes you wear, or the number on the scale. Worth isn’t earned, it’s given.

So, the 8th question is “How long after writing first book until you actually were published?”

1 week.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

My first book One S’more Summer, took about 10 years from when I started writing to getting published. The second two in the series S’more to Lose and Love You S’more were published about a year apart.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

Talking of Two Women & Too Many Men which is my chick lit novel, I self published on Amazon within months of finishing the book.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

I self-published my first novel in 2005 and saw my first contract with DCL Publications in 2008. I still periodically self-publish certain pieces as some things I write may not be fitting for DCL, but I’d rather self-publish those pieces than work with another publisher. DCL is like family after all of these years, and I’m faithful to family.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

Early oughts, I think it was.

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

I finished my first complete manuscript in fall 2010, and published my first book (a different one) May 2015.

7) Author #7:  Summer Dowell

I finished my first book about five months before I published it. Editing is always a slow process for me but especially for that first one.

8) Author #8:  Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

My first story ‘We Made Snow Angels’ was published November 2018, just a few months after my submission.

I self published immediately with an eBook on Amazon, but then progressed to Paperback books after my second book, so all three are in eBook and hard copy, and I now have an audiobook version for the first book too.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

Just a year. I know, I got lucky.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

It took me over fifteen years to be published, I would say. I wrote six novels before I got an agent, and a further two that got me an agent but no publishing deal. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper was the first book I had published, three years ago.

So, the 7th question is “What inspired the characters?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

The history of the reign of Scotland…also the areas of the world where sex trafficking is known to have high rates.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

Many of characters in The Campfire Series are a composite of real and fictional people. For example, Victoria and Annabelle Ellicott are my fictionalized version of Kate and Pippa Middleton. Trini Bower is my take on Tim Gunn from Project Runway. The other main characters are a mix of real and made up traits.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

The people around me, and myself. I observe real life events and then wonder how my characters would react in that situation.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

‘Ashaki’s Beauty Parlor’ is a spin-off of my 2006 novel ‘The Estranged Affair: A Love Story.’ To this day, there is debate in my small town about who Daniel and Chandler might be based on, and I’ll never tell the answer. As for Ashaki, she is based off my best friend and soul sister Crystal.

My Muses inspire all.

I came up with the concept when I was processing a serious breakup of mine. I had one of the characters focus on the betrayal felt when someone you spent so much time with and invested so much in decides they like someone else better, and the other character dealt with the guilt that comes along with realizing you might not want to stay with the person you’d previously envisioned your life with.

Usually people in my life. Each of my characters is a blend of personalities and traits of so many people I’ve known. There’s nothing more fun than coming up with a unique persona for a new character, especially when I have someone to base them off of!

In my story ‘All I Want is to Be Happy,’ my main character Michael is inspired by my BFF, while Michael’s BFF is inspired by me.

9) Author #9:  Sasha Lane

I wanted characters with a bond, and a really strong friendship. I’m lucky to find myself with some really good friends and I wanted that to be at the core of the book. I wanted to show them sharing a journey through life with all the challenges that can be thrown at us.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

A young woman who is struggling in life while her Dad’s second family flourishes. She has everything within her and I want her to discover that, so I’m writing the ending I want for her.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

My heroine Martha Storm, took inspiration from several places. My own inability to say ‘no’ when I was younger, and taking on too much. My mum, who helps out an elderly neighbour with her sewing, and a friend who does a lot for her community. I drew threads in from all these and others.

So, the 6th question is “What do you do for writers block?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

Drink a cup of red wine, exercise, pray, find depth in the meanings of my life and it’s environment, play jazz or old gospel music

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

A shower always helps me break through. I don’t know why but some of my best ideas come to me when I am washing my hair.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

Get up and walk away, do something else and leave it alone. Then when I am doing other stuff my friends pop into mind and I wonder what they’re doing today, then just like that I can go back to writing.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

I periodically teach a class I created years ago called Creative Convulsions. Through it, I help authors deal with writers block through mind tricks, word association games, paragraph assignments and other fun projects.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

Pray to any god or goddess that chooses to listen.

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

I rest and brainstorm. Resting takes care of the burnout aspect, brainstorming takes me past the block.

Something physical. It could be as simple as standing up and walking around my room, but moving always seems to stimulate more thoughts.

Plow through it. Sometimes you have to just sit down and make yourself write. Claiming writers block is giving writers block ownership of your creativity. You own your creativity. Make it flow.

Go to a coffee shop, grab a latte, and people watch. I find this helps me relax, and drift off into my own world.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

I go do something else. I watch a movie. I go to the beach. I get away from it. When I’m on deadline, the adrenaline kicks in and I don’t have that problem. Because I like to actually eat.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

If I’m stuck on a chapter or section of the book, I leave it alone and try writing something else. It’s hard to be creative when you’re stuck! I usually think of a scene or situation I really want to write, and concentrate on that.

I figure out what question I need answered, then I keep writing.

So, the 5th question is “How do you keep the story rolling?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

Imagine the funniest twists and plots.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

Dialogue is always a great way to propel a scene or story forward. Dialogue is the best way to “show” and not tell what a character is feeling and experiencing.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

I make my characters real to me, I spend hours whilst driving and washing dishes etc making them come alive in my mind. I picture every detail about them, the way they walk and talk and dress, what they like and don’t like, they become like friends, so when I start to write the ink just flows.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

You have to keep it fresh, and your protagonist must always be on direction with new obstacles awaiting. Without excitement, adventure, or love developing throughout, many authors hit a brick wall while writing.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

Keep on typing!

It’s as simple as asking myself “Okay, what happens now?” It’s easy to start writing a scene where nothing happens, so when I hit that, I just try to figure out what the next plot point is and how to make that happen, regardless of if it feels right for it to happen right now in the overall arc. Every single time the pacing ends up being what it needs to be, so I’m careful not to include filler.

As bad as it sounds, I always like to think “how can I make this situation worse for my main character?” Usually if I’m getting stuck that means I’m making things too easy for my hero/heroine!

8) Author #8:  Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

What I write has to make me smile (or gasp, knowing there is a smile coming soon). If that hasn’t happened in a bit, I’ll reconsider the direction of a story and tweak it so that something happens that’ll bring the smile back to my lips.

9) Author #9:  Sasha Lane

I always write the last chapter first so I know exactly how I want the book to end and what I’m working towards. The rest is just the journey to get to that point, which is fuelled by my overactive imagination!

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

If I get bored, I change things up. I’m very ADD and if I’m bored, my reader is going to be bored. Sometimes, I have to stop and just wait it out while my subconscious sorts it out.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

Some days it can be tough. If part of a story isn’t coming through, then I edit for a while instead. Or I think what my character needs to do next, what issue are they trying to solve, who do they need to speak to, etc. and that propels the story forward.

I gift my characters with a lot of issues, particularly with themselves. Women love it when we are our own bad guy.

So, the 4th question is “What made you choose chicklit genre?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

The character in my book is a Queen though she is unaware of it.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

I didn’t set out to write chick lit, but the setting of One S’more Summer, a sleep away camp seemed to lend itself to the genre.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

I didn’t start out to write a chick lit book, in fact my characters are aged 30 and 40 and I assumed it was women’s lit that I was writing. It was only after people read it and started telling me how much they laughed and cried and loved the characters that I realized they were right in telling me I had actually written a chick lit book!

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

I don’t choose the genres; the genres choose me. (lol) I write whatever story comes to me. Sometimes it’s Chick Lit; sometimes it’s Sci Fi. Sometimes it’s horror or contemporary. As long as the story is there, I don’t shy away from a genre.

I’ve never chosen a genre in my life. So, I didn’t choose it .. that’s just how it turned out.

It’s what I love to read the most! I love the real stories told in such a funny, lively, bright way.

I love a good romance story, but I also love making people laugh. The quick and easy banter in most of my stories is my favorite part of writing so the choice was pretty natural

I write what makes me happy. I write genuinely happy, humorous, and entertaining stories that show splices of life and moments in time.

My writing style is light-hearted so it suits chick lit perfectly. I also love to write in first person so this works well too. I also wanted to write books that people could laugh along with and enjoy, as a bit of escapism from real life.

It’s just my natural voice. I wrote third-person romance for years until I switched to first-person and found the real Kristin.

I enjoy writing stories with warm characters who go on journeys of discovery. I’m not sure it was a definite choice, it’s just how my writing comes out. I always say there are enough stories about killers in the world, without me contributing to the genre.

So, the 3rd question is “Who is your favourite chick lit author and how has her/his works inspire your writing style?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

Maya Angelou is my favorite chick lit author. One of her very early books sheds emotion on the realities of sexual molestation of young black girls in the afro centric community.

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

I love Emily Giffin and Sophie Kinsella. Their books have great dialogue, characters and settings.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding was the first book in this genre that I read, and therefore it made the biggest impression on what I would call chick-lit writing. I love the ‘real’ character that emphasizes all the negatives about a woman whilst at the same time endearing her to readers so they can root for her happiness.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe, and this is why I encouraged her to become a publisher author. She finds the humor in life in ways that many of us overlook, and she’s able to utilize that joy of life and love in her stories like no one I’ve ever read.

I would say I’ve liked one I JUST discovered. Jennifer Patrica O’Keeffe

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

Sophie Kinsella! I started reading her when I was so young that her voice has shaped all of my writing. I love the real issues she addresses is such a humorous way with the assurance that it will all be okay in the end. It’s a hard balance to strike but she accomplishes it every time.

I love so many, but Sophie Kinsella’s dry humor always get me laughing! I hope I can do the same thing for my readers

I am wide-read and inspired by many. I’d hate to have to pick and choose a favorite.

Sophie Kinsella and Lindsey Kelk are my two favourite Chick Lit authors. Sophie Kinsella’s ‘Shopaholic’ series is probably the series that got me addicted to Chick Lit. Lindsey Kelk grew up near to where I did so I have followed her books from day one. I love the fact that her characters are so easy to like and you feel like they’re your friend by the end of the book. Both authors create characters that you can love from the first chapter, and that feel entirely real.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

Marian Keyes. She never shies away from dark topics and can make me laugh about anything. That’s how I want to write. I want people to deal in truth, but know there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel.

I don’t have a favourite author in this genre. I enjoy all different types of books by lots of different authors. I don’t tend to follow any singular writer.

Oh, I do love a good Sophie Kinsella novel!

So, the 2nd question is “How is chick lit different from women’s fiction?”

1) Author #1 :  Tetasheri Whitney

To me chick lit differs, in a more relatable and realistic viewpoint of the livelihood of being a ‘woman’

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

Chick lit is a bit lighter often referencing pop culture, fashion, and there is almost always a love interest or two.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

Chick lit, for me, donates a more light-hearted book aimed at younger women mostly but not exclusively. Easy to read, often fun, sometimes saucy. Women’s fiction is a wide umbrella that covers books for women mostly written by women on a slightly more serious note, always with a woman as the main character.

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

Chick Lit, in my experience, is more about the empowerment of your strong female lead versus the tender or dramatic moments that help craft great Women’s Fiction.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

I find Chick Lit to be stronger and more empowering than women’s fiction.

For one, chick lit guarantees a happy ending! I also feel like there’s freedom to use a lighter voice. It also needs to take place during a specific time of life (typically 20’s to 30’s) and tends to include a focus on the MC’s career.

7) Author #7:  Summer Dowell

Chick lit covers similar themes of romance and womanhood, but I feel like it does it in a much more lighthearted manner. There is always an element of humor and fun in most of them

8) Author #8:  Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

Women’s fiction is generally written by women, for women, tackling issues specific to women. Chick lit can be written by anyone and is fiction that appeals to women in some strong, relative way.

9) Author #9:  Sasha Lane

Some people can have the impression that Chick Lit is ‘pink and fluffy’ but for me, it means stories about women that I can relate to, and a book that I can easily lose myself in.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

It’s the humor and the rhythm of the dialogue. Women’s fiction takes you to dark places, but Chick Lit will make you giggle while to you. It makes it tough issues easier to digest.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

I think it’s just a type of women’s fiction, but I feel ‘chick lit’ isn’t the most complimentary term for it. Chick lit tackles many issues that women deal with today, but in a more light-hearted way. I usually describe myself as a writer of ‘commercial fiction’ rather than say I write women’s fiction or chick lit.

12) Author #12:  Katie Joyce Cross

I think the expectations are much narrower for Chick Lit! For CL, I see it as a coming of age story, typically involving romance (but not about romance), with girls that are early twenties and struggling to figure out adulting.

So, the 1st question is “Which issue of modern womanhood does your book addresses? Why the issue?”

Sex trafficking and abuse to neglected women

2) Author #2:  Beth Merlin

In my series, the main character Gigi takes a back seat in her career and love life. Over the course of the three books, she learns her worth and is able to become the heroine of her own life.

3) Author #3:  Tracy Orchard

The controversy of internet dating and of ‘testing the waters’ before committing. The issue addresses why is it ok for men to have multiple relationships when women, ideally, should only have one, especially at ‘one time.’

4) Author #4:  Jae El Foster

In ‘Ashaki’s Beauty Parlor,’ our protagonist faces three strong obstacles that most modern women can, in one way or another, relate to, including: the loss of a parent, the betrayal of a lover, and owning her own business.

5) Author #5:  Adesanya

An Autumn of Incident covers one woman’s new life after surviving emotional abuse.

6) Author #6:  Amy Spitzfaden

Fingerprinted Hearts addresses being a woman in business and dealing with imposter syndrome and feelings of unworthiness. It also deals with sisterhood, both literal and figurative, and struggling to align your inner compass with your outer relationships.

7) Author #7:  Summer Dowell

Independence. Most of my books are about young single women who are supporting themselves and fulfilling their own dreams. Eventually they all end up with a man, but I try to show no they’re totally capable and self-sufficient without one!

My story ‘We Made Snow Angels’ addresses tackling the odds and pushing through embarrassment. I think we’ve all made fools of ourselves before in one way or another, and it’s important to see that we’re all just human beings doing the best we can do to struggle through.

The struggle to balance the many roles that a woman has in life, and the pressure to ‘fit in’ to what society expects of women. I address the issues of marriage and children and the fact that women can feel conflicted if they do not follow this path. I have chosen this theme as I think it’s something that people can relate too. We all have such busy lives and can put ourselves under so much pressure to be perfect at everything.

10) Author #10:  Kristin Billerbeck

Daddy Issues — when Dad is a good parent to your younger siblings and you must find your worth elsewhere.

11) Author #11:  Phaedra Patrick

The Library of Lost and Found addresses the issue of being able to say ‘no’. My heroine, Martha Storm, finds herself saying ‘yes’ to everyone, and taking too much on, so she often feels overwhelmed. I think women today have lots on their shoulders but can feel uncomfortable saying ‘no’ to things.

Our belief that our value has anything to do with the number on the scale.
