The Trains

We felt them first. Fingers pressed to the rails,
a dull rumble filled our hands and hummed into
our arms before the cone of light, the great clatter

of metal against metal. Trestled high, above the
bridge on Grand Avenue, we knew those tracks
went on forever, between trees that lined the ties

like stations of the cross. The hill was forbidden but
holy, thick with clover, ripe with berries in spring.
The year I was nine, an April blizzard swept the

sky and we went to the trains in the dark. The wires
strummed into sparks, the rails were a dazzle of
shadows. Our faces – ghosts of our selves – reflected

in every train car window, lines of breath etched in
passing glass. Above us, chimney smoke hung like
smears of candle grease among the clouds.

We were grubby and poor, but we…

It’s all about the numbers game. As an author we want to reach as wide a market as possible to sell more books to more people – those of us who’ve chosen to attempt to get paid for our writing that is.

So we scrimp and save to hire the right cover designer, the best editor (we can afford), buy a table-sized poster and a book trailer to help sell that hundred print copies we ordered of our book… and then the cash – our budget – runs out.

In a perfect world (or quasi-perfect for an Indie Author anyway) we’d still have a couple hundred left over for publicity – that might entail hiring a company to do a blog tour and enough money to allow us to mail out those giveaway copies of our books done via Goodreads and rafflecopter.

But when it comes to hiring a publicist…

The great thing about video book trailers is that you can use them on a laptop or tablet at local author events, place them on your author website, your Goodreads profile page, Amazon’s Author Central and, of course, YouTube.
