So, the 2nd question is “What is the message you aim to deliver from the non-fiction book(s) you wrote?”

1) Author #1 : Gilbert Van Kerckhove

We must all work together to stop the degradation of our planet

2) Author #2:  Mike Kowis

I try to inspire my readers and give them the tools they need to success as an author or college instructor.

3) Author #3: Kate Iroegbu

To send the message that no matter how difficult your situation may be you can indeed live a triumphant life if you have the key strategies to handle adversity.

4) Author #4: Umm Sulaim

The nonfiction books I authored convey a simple message: Be neutral and the truth becomes clear.

5) Author #5: Ken Johnson

In my latest book, A Quick Guide to Archetypes & Allegory, I seek to assist fiction writers in crafting better stories with more relatable characters. Too few authors worry about their fellow writer. It is my goal for the book to be a base resource for the next generation of award-winning authors and script writers.

6) Author #6: Debby Gies

All my books hold messages in them. I share my stories on various topics on life experiences so that others who relate can learn how I overcame my own obstacles, giving them hope that there is always a way for resolution if we first identify and admit our shortcomings.

7) Author #7:  Pratima Nagaraj

My first book is about choosing to be more vulnerable and authentic. I wanted people to know that vulnerability is a great source of strength and embracing it can change your life remarkably! In our society, vulnerability is considered a weakness and this is the myth I wanted to bust through the book. My second book is about silence and solitude. In this current technology and social media dominated world, we have lost the art of spending quiet time in solitude. Through this book I want to invite people to get off being busy and rushing through their lives and instead embrace moments of mindfulness and silence.

I am not trying to establish a second career as a writer here at my advanced age, but I am striving to build a legacy of fine inspirational literature for posterity and to give people who are in distress everywhere some hope for a better future,

9) Author #9: Errol Baptiste

The message I aim to deliver from the non-fiction books that I wrote must be told on a very accurate account relating onto the subjects.

10) Author #10: Edna Cane-Swannepoel

To be inspired. To never give up on your dreams.

11) Author #11: Kristalen Babb

My life and how my mom raised me set the roots to wanting to write my book. I felt I needed to be heard for the ones who have a similar paths as me.

12) Author #12) Steve Wilson

So, the 1st question is “An author could easily write a fiction book out of some true events to keep things confidential. But you chose to write a non-fiction book. What encouraged you?”

1) Author #1 : Gilbert Van Kerckhove

My topic is a broad investigation of environmental issues. This cannot be fiction.

2) Author #2:  Mike Kowis

I write nonfiction books to help my fellow authors and college instructors. To me, writing nonfiction is just another form of teaching and I love teaching others (I teach a night class at the local college as a part-time job)!

3) Author #3: Kate Iroegbu

The fact that my opening up to share my story will connect more to my readers and also believe that they can also overcome their life hurdles just the way I did.

4) Author #4: Umm Sulaim

The nonfiction books I have authored have been spurred by the prominence of misinformation and disinformation on the topics. The nonfiction books I authored were thoroughly researched, objective, and provided hitherto uncommon knowledge on the topics.

5) Author #5: Ken Johnson

Fiction authors tend to write about how things could, or should, be. I like to tell how things truly are. For me, non-fiction can sometimes be wilder than fiction. Some of the things I write about, most people would never believe it if I had written it as fiction.

6) Author #6: Debby Gies

I’ve always been a truth teller and a sharer of stories of my observations. When I wrote my first book, it was from a compilation of years of journaling about my life growing up with a narcissistic mother. Putting that book together became like a cathartic release. From that book forward, I wanted to continue talking about real life situations I encountered and overcame, wanting to share my experiences in hopes that others may be enlightened. I chose not to disguise my stories in fiction, but to share my truth openly.

7) Author #7:  Pratima Nagaraj

I chose to write non-fiction over fiction because it helped me keep the protagonist/character very real. I felt this is very essential, especially in the self-help genre as real-life characters can truly inspire and motivate the readers to bring in changes into their own lives. I wanted my readers to think – “If she can do it, I can do it too”

I write nonfiction books because I truly believe that truth is stranger than fiction, and my educational background is in both journalism and English literature which is perfect training for a nonfiction writer. But I do go to great lengths to protect the reputations of people who are still living, often by changing their names or by not using a last name.

9) Author #9: Errol Baptiste

I chose to write a non-fiction book due to my past experience as a former anti-apartheid activist and an experienced anti-racist campaigner also got a background in International Law as a student in my fondest memory at Middlesex University had the unique opportunity to spend a semester abroad at the University of Cape Town in South Africa during the Academic Year of 1997/1998.

10) Author #10: Edna Cane-Swannepoel

I wanted to speak about my life. Let people know, things can change.

11) Author #11: Kristalen Babb

My life and how my mom raised me set the roots to wanting to write my book. I felt I needed to be heard for the ones who have a similar paths as me.

12) Author #12) Steve Wilson

Didn’t want people to make the same mistakes I did.

Author Interview with Dipa Sanatani

Dipa Sanatani
The Little Light

Dipa Sanatani

Author of The Little Light: A Story of Reincarnation and the Crazy Cosmic Family

Describe yourself in five words

Curious. Adventurous. Happy go lucky.

What fact about yourself would really surprise people?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut. Even today, I love visiting planetariums and observatories. It reminds me that the world is a vast and glorious place full of undiscovered mysteries.

How do you work through self-doubts and fear?

I follow my heart’s desire. And that’s that.

What scares you the most?

Heights. Seriously. The first time I went rock climbing, I nearly threw up.

What makes you happiest?

I enjoy both solitude and the company of others. There’s a sense of exhilaration that sweeps through me whenever I pack my bags and embark on a solo adventure in a new country. I also relish a good one-on-one conversation that’s full of depth and substance. Throw in a nice meal and we’re in business.

What books did you love growing up?

As a kid, I loved Roald Dahl. I re-read The Witches countless times. He has a brilliant way of weaving real life into a story and making it fantastical. I read a lot of Enid Blyton, too. Archie comics were a childhood favorite of mine.

I think I’m dating myself… Yes, I grew up in the 90s.

Why do you write?

Because I must. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t write. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer. I don’t know where this desire comes from. It’s hard to explain.

What do you hope your obituary will say about you?

She fulfilled her personal legend. I’m a Paulo Coelho fan. Can you tell?

Location and life experiences can really influence writing. Tell us how your travels have influenced your work.

I’ve lived, worked and studied in: Singapore, Australia, Israel, Japan and China. Each culture I’ve encountered has molded and shaped me in some way. Perhaps I’ll tell that story when I’m old enough to write a memoir.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

San Francisco. What a city. What a vibe.

How did you develop your writing?

I started by writing words. Words became sentences. Sentences became paragraphs. Paragraphs became chapters. And one day, I was holding my very own debut novel in my hand… I’d say that’s the gist of it.

Do you find it hard to share your work?

I think there’s a big difference between the stuff you write for yourself and the stuff you write for publication. It would be ill-advised to confuse the two.

What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?

To be an authorpreneur is to constantly develop and expand your skillset. When I started my own publishing business Mith Books, I knew I had to become a jack of all trades. It hasn’t been easy – but the journey’s been incredible. I’ve grown so much so quickly.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in starting Mith Books?

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes into making a book happen. It’s also an industry that’s been going through an overhaul since ereaders entered the market. The game’s been changing for several years now and will continue to change in the future. Personally, I think it’s an exciting time to be in the book business.

Currently, I’m working ridiculously long hours as I’m in the startup phase of a business. Finding the right people to work with has been a challenge. I’ve collaborated with some incredible individuals as well as ran into a few duds. It’s part self-study and part trial-and-error.

What marketing works for you?

I’d say that unlike other ‘products’ available in the market, a book is different – especially when we’re talking about fiction. We can do our best to hustle and get it out there into the hands of reviewers and readers, but we never know when the story will take off and find its way into the public imagination. It’s not a linear path.

Is your family supportive? Do your friends support you?

I’d say a vast majority of them would prefer that I live a ‘stable and secure’ life where I conform to societal norms. But the heart wants what it wants. I’ve met way too many people well-meaning people who make the mistake of projecting their own fears and expectations onto me.

One thing I’ve learned is that it is unwise to stand between a soul and its heart’s desire. The soul always chooses the heart’s desire.

What other jobs have you had in your life?

My background’s in business and education. I have extensive experience in the public-school system as well as the private, corporate and government sectors.

If you could study any subject at university what would you pick?

Astrophysics. Having said that, I don’t have any intention of going back to school anytime soon. I prefer learning-by-doing. I no longer have it in me to sit in a classroom.

Tell us about your new book.

The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu – Celestial Beings from world mythology – bicker and squabble, just like any family. But they’re going to have to put their differences aside to help the Little Light – a wise soul, imbued with insight and curiosity – prepare for its birth on Planet Earth, where it has a great and far-reaching destiny…

What inspired The Little Light?

The idea came to me when I was lying in bed alone in my apartment in Japan. I was contemplating the vast nature of the universe when I suddenly thought, “How nice it would be if I could invite the planets over for a discussion on life, love and the larger purpose for our existence.”

I promptly opened up my notebook and drew a sketch of what the mythological Nine Celestial Beings would look like if they were ‘updated’ for the modern era. The idea ruminated in my head for four years before I finally sat down to write the story.

It’s vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing. Tell us about your marketing campaign.

Many of my readers have said that The Little Light is a unique book in the spirituality genre. My novel handles themes like reincarnation, mythology, cosmology and folklore. There’s nothing else like it available in the market. Titles in the spirituality genre are typically non-fiction and intended for an adult audience. I’ve written The Little Light with younger readers in mind. My goal is to inspire their curiosity in these topics in a fun and accessible way.

This has been both my debut novel’s strength as well as the challenge I’ve faced in marketing it. This is typical of books that don’t fit into a neat category. Even marketing veterans from traditional publishing houses have told me that they’ve faced this very same challenge with some of their favorite books.

Firstly, I’d say get the buzz going about the kind of book it actually is. Target the right bloggers and reviewers that will ‘get’ your book. Don’t be hasty and rush into things too quickly. Once you have a better idea of the initial response, you can plan a more large-scale promotion campaign.

If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask?

The Nine Great Celestial Beings, of course! The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. They’ve been gazing down at mankind since time as we know it began. I’m sure they’d have great stories to tell about the history of the earth.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?

Long walks by the ocean. Stargazing. Travelling. A good conversation with an old friend.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?

Life is short. Savour it.

Guest Post: The Writing Journey of Luke D Light

Luke D Light

My preferred pen name is Luke D Light. I’m a Bronx, NY Native. I write as a mean to express myself, come up with short stories and even bring awareness to certain topics. I write plenty of poems, some of which I incorporate into my songwriting ability, short stories with a science fiction twist. 95% of materials I’ve produced are poetry books. That is my main speciality. Even my other genre books would have a poem in it or two.

Some obstacles with writing could be finding the time or inspiration. I’ve been meaning to write a third installment in the sci fic series actually because the two books I have on the market are like crossover events/stories. Just the opportunity to be alone and draw out a detailed scenario just hasn’t presented itself, the time wasn’t right. One thing my buddy once said was that I had such a way with words that I was able to draw her deeply connected to the story. Funny how one thing lead to another, I used to have like this stick figure comic story and eventually I was working on a movie script and scenario for the origin movie to explain the background history a bit. When I was 13, I told my late uncle that I wanted to be the writer and team up with an illustrator to help create this comic book series. Which I have recently 2018-2019 worked with illustrators on panel sketches. Who knows what the future holds!

I been writing for 11 years whether it be speech bubbles on comic sketch, short stories, poems, etc.. Recently, I had an idea, I write it out. Poems bleed onto the notepad, ideas crawl their way to the notes. Might take a week or two for anything to gets published. As a self publisher, that’s the routine with Amazon Kindle. I’m more passionate about poetry and songwriting in general as opposed to the other genre yet it’s a fun escape and challenging activity and definitely interested in creating more material. For now, let me do the one thing I’ve failed before and that is promote my work. Till next time, namaste. – Luke Daniel Light (RA Light)

Author Guest Post: Sourcing a Story-Line by Bill Fortin

Sourcing a Story-line

PERRYVILLE, MD 0700 WEDNESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER, 2010

Where do the ideas for the story-lines originate?
In my case it a combination of career, travel, and a wide selection of personal experiences spanning 20 years in the international marketplace. RFC (Redeye Fulda Cold), for example, literally washed over me like an ocean wave.

Are you familiar with the term Déjàvu?
After almost fifty years it was the simple wording on the highway signage that opened the floodgates. The saga of RFC had been silently running in the back of my mind for quite a while. Besides… I was told by my family doctor that it is important, from time to time, to confront all of our first near-death experiences. The year was 2012. We were transporting one of our horses on the interstate. We were on our way to the New Bolton Medical Center. His name was Quiot Handsome… because he was. The good news of the day was the very talented surgeon, who had recently worked on Barbaro, was going to operate on our Handsome. It was the signage displayed just past the toll booth that triggered the event. The flashback hit me like a ton of bricks. I had not contemplated this place and its unique situation for over 40 years. It was at that moment I made a decision. The saga of what happened to me and my team so very long ago would finally be told. RFC is the accounting of the silent combat fought in West Germany’s production of the Cold War and the experiences felt in a little known piece of real estate called the Fulda Gap.

Medellin Acapulco Cold (A Cold War Adventure with Rick Fontain Book 3)
Medellin: Acapulco Cold (Rick Fontain Book 3) by Bill Fortin

Blurb:

In March 1987, the CIA’s Operation Acapulco Cold took on the Medellín cartel. The journey would be dangerous. The alternative for not recovering the nuke would be too horrible to imagine.
A theft occurs as a result of President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s treaty agreement in January 1986. Russian SS-20 medium-range missiles were removed from Eastern Europe and their nuclear MIRV packages removed. A shadow group inside the failing Russian government steals three of the nose-cone assembles.
A Russian named Geonov is charged with selling one of these devices to the Medellin cartel. The asking price was $40 million dollars in cash. Pablo Escobar did not even blink when he was offered one. Operation Acapulco Cold is the detailed action taken by the CIA to address this life-altering situation.

This giveaway is for 3 winners choice of one print or ebook copy of the book. Print is open to the U.S. only and ebook is available worldwide. This giveaway ends August 30, 2019, midnight pacific time. Entries are accepted via Rafflecopter only.

Medellin: Acapulco Cold (Rick Fontain Book 3) by Bill Fortin

Review:

A face-paced book that grips your attention from the very beginning. If you enjoy reading historical books, this book would surely entertain you. Fortin’s work clearly shows that an extensive research had been made to write this book, which revolves around the Cold War.

It’s hard to believe that this is a work of fiction, especially when the story features Ronald Reagan and a detailed setting of the 80’s. Truly an enjoyable read and it didn’t take a long time to finish the book, considering that the plot really hooked me into the story.

A 4.5 star !

An Interview with Laura St John

23659320_830360763808717_3615245197215860324_n
Laura St John

Laura St John is on a mission to spread kindness by teaching children to accept themselves and other children who may be different. Laura is a wife, and mom, and she works with children who have been abused and removed from their homes. She’s the author of two popular children’s books, Don’t Judge a Bug By Its Cover, and the Christmas House.

Why did you start writing children’s books?

I wrote the manuscript for both of my first two books over 15 years ago and have tweaked them along the way. I saw a need for a book about not judging people by how they look. I was trying to shape young minds to become more aware of these issues as adults.

Did you read to your children when they were younger?

Yes, every night! I missed out on being read to. My dad died when I was five and my mom was pretty busy with three kids, getting her degree, working and taking care of the home. I made sure to read to my children every night at bedtime.

How have your children influenced your writing?

The bug book was partially due to my own experiences of the past. There was some bullying along the way and some insecurity came with that which took a while to overcome. Teen image was very important for my kid’s generation – sometimes too important. Magazine images and the media created certain body type guidelines as to how we all are supposed to look.  And with that, feel about our bodies.

What is the main theme or purpose of Don’t Judge a Bug by Its Cover?

These days the news is filled with school shootings, bullying and body shaming. Children feel so much pressure to fit in, look like models and to be popular. The main message of Don’t Judge a Bug by Its Cover, is to accept others not based on their looks but who they are as humans. To look beyond the exterior features and learn to see the beauty and specialness in every person.

What ages is the book for?

I wrote it for kid’s preschool to elementary age with the hope that I can help them understand the principles of accepting others at an early age.

I want children to learn to accept others and make friends based on how they act as humans not the physical or visual aspects. Also, to help friends in need and realize that even nice-looking people can be lonely. Some of us think that if people are famous or pretty that they have tons of friends and support. But really loneliness can fall onto anyone; no matter how you look or what you have.

What are some things parents can do to help their kids accept themselves and have positive self-esteem?

Here’s three simple things parents can do to help their children accept themselves:

  1. Let your children know they are awesome just the way they are, regardless of weight, height, IQ, glasses, sports abilities etc.
  2. Say something positive to your children every day.
  3. Focus on their strengths and successes, not their weaknesses.

What are some things parents can do to help their kids accept other kids?

Parents should:

  1. NEVER say anything derogatory about another person. Children see others being prejudiced or hear them say insensitive things then they repeat what they’ve seen.
  2. ALWAYS treat others as you would want them to treat you; no matter if they are different. Freedom to be yourself and not judge others who have that same right.
  3. ALWAYS be kind, understanding and respectful.

Where can people get your book?

If you want a personalized autographed copy and bookmarker, go to my website www.LauraStJohnEnterprises.com or you can also find my books on Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and Amazon.
